NDA

The National Defence Academy (NDA) admits students to the Army, Navy and Air Force wings through an entrance examination held twice a year, generally in the months of April and September. This examination is conducted by the Union Public Service Commission.
Age and marital status: A candidate must be an unmarried male, at least 161/2years old but below the age of 19 as of January 1, or July 1, of the year succeeding the examination year.

Educational Qualifications:
(1) For Army Wing of National Defence Academy: Must have successfully completed Class XII in the 10 + 2 pattern of school education or equivalent examination conducted by a State education board or a university.
2) For Air Force and Naval Wings of National Defence Academy and for the 10 + 2 (Executive Branch) Course at the Naval Academy: Must have passed Class 12 of the 10 + 2 pattern of school education or equivalent with Physics and Mathematics conducted by a State education board or a university. Candidates currently in Class XII in the 10 + 2 pattern of school education, or equivalent examination, can also apply.

Examination

Plan of the Examination: The examination comprises (i) a written examination and (ii) intelligence, obstacles and group tests of the candidates who qualify in the written examination.

Differential Calculus – Concept of a real valued function – domain, range and graph of a functions, one to one, onto and inverse functions. Notion of limit, standard limits – examples. Continuity of functions- examples, algebraic operations on continuous functions. Derivative of function at a point, geometrical and physical interpretation of a derivative – applications. Derivatives of sum, product and quotient of functions, derivatives of a function with respect to another function, derivative of a composite function. Second order derivatives. Increasing and decreasing functions. Application of derivatives in problems of maxima and minima.

Integral Calculus and Differential Equations- Integration as inverse of differentiation, integration by substitution and by parts, standard integrals involving algebraic expressions, trigonometric, exponential and hyperbolic functions. Evaluation of definite integrals – determination of areas of plane regions bounded by curves – applications, Definition of order and degree of a differential equation, formation of a differential equation by examples. General and particular solution of a differential equation, solution of first order and first degree differential equations of various type – examples. Application in problems of growth and decay.

Vector Algebra – Vectors in two and three dimensions, magnitude and direction of vector. Unit and null vectors, addition of vectors, scalar multiplication of a vector, scalar product or dot product of two vectors. Vector product or cross product of two vectors. Applications work done by a force and moment of a force, and in geometrical problems.

Statistics and Probability – Statistics: Classification of data, frequency distribution, cumulative frequency distribution- examples. Graphical representation-histogram, pie chart, frequency polygon-examples. Measures of central tendency-mean, median and mode. Variance and standard deviation-determination and comparison. Correlation and regression. Probability: random experiment, outcomes and associated sample space, events, mutually exclusive and exhaustive events, impossible and certain events. Union and intersection of events. Complementary, elementary and composite events. Definition of probability-classical and statistical examples. Elementary theorems or probability. Simple problems, conditional probability, Bayes’ theorem-simple problems. Random variable as function on a sample space. Binomial distribution, examples of random experiments giving rise to binomial distribution.

CONDITIONS OF

ELIGIBILITY

(a)

Nationality : A candidate

must either be :

(i) a Citizen of India, or

(ii) a subject of Bhutan, or

(iii) a subject of Nepal, or

(iv) a Tibetan refugee who came over to India before the 1st January, 1962 with the intention of

permanently setting in India, or

(v) a person of Indian origin who has migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka and East African

Countries of Kenya, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire and

Ethiopia and Vietnam with the intention of permanently settling in India.

Provided that a candidate belonging to categories (ii), (iii), (iv) and (v) above shall be a person in whose favour a certificate of eligibility has been issued by the Government of India.

Certificate in whose case a certificate of eligibility is necessary, may be admitted to the examination provisionally subject to the necessary certificate being given to him by the Govt. before declaration of result by UPSC.

(b) Age Limits, Sex and Marital Status : Unmarried / upto 24years.

(c) Educational Qualifications :

(i) For I.M.A. and Officers’ Training Academy- Degree of a recognized University or equivalent.

(ii) For Naval Academy – B.Sc. (with Physics and Mathematics) or Bachelor of Engineering.

(iii) For Air Force Academy- Degree of a recognized University (with Physics and Mathematics

at 10 +2 level) or Bachelor of Engineering.
Graduates with first choice as Army/Navy/Air Force are to submit proof of graduation provisional certificates on the date of commencement of the SSB Interview at the SSB.

Candidates who are studying in the final year Degree course and have yet to pass the final yea degree examination can also apply but they will be required to submit proof of passing the degree examination.

(d) Physical Standards :
Candidates must be physically fit according to physicals standards for admission to Combined Defence Services Examination as per guidelines.

The maximum marks allotted to the written examination and to the interviews will be equal for each course, i.e., the maximum marks allotted to the written examination and to the interviews will be 300, 300, 300 and 200 each for admission to the Indian Military Academy, Naval Academy, Air Force Academy and Officers’ Training Academy respectively.

3.THE PAPERS IN ALL THE SUBJECTS WILL CONSIST OF OBJECTIVE TYPE QUESTIONS ONLY. The question papers (Test Booklets) of General Knowledge and Elementary Mathematics will be set bilingually in Hindi as well as English.
4.In the question papers, wherever necessary, questions involving the metric system of Weights and Measures only will be set.
5.Candidates must write the papers in their own hand. In no circumstances will they be allowed the help of a scribe to write answers for them.
6.The Commission have discretion to fix qualifying marks in any or all the subjects of the examination.
7.The candidates are not permitted to use calculator for answering objective type papers (Test Booklets). They should not, therefore, bring the same inside the Examination Hall.

STANDARD AND SYLLABUS OF THE EXAMINATION

STANDARD

The standard of the papers in Elementary Mathematics will be of Matriculation level.

The standard of papers in order subjects will approximately be such as may be expected will approximately be such as may be expected of a graduate of an Indian University.

ENGLISH (Code No. 01)

The question paper will be designed to test the candidates’ understanding of English and Workman-like use of words.

GENERAL KNOWLEDGE (Code No. 02)

General Knowledge including knowledge of current events and of such matters of everyday observation and experience in their scientific aspects as may be expected of an educated person who has not made a special study of any scientific subject. The paper will also include questions on History of India and Geography of a nature which candidates should be able to answer without special study.

ELEMENTARY MATHEMATICS (Code No. 03)

Arithmetic

Number System-Natural numbers, Integers, Rational and Real numbers. Fundamental operations-addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, Square roots, Decimal fractions.

Unitary method-Time and distance, time and work, percentage-applications to simple and compound interest, profit and loss, ratio and proportion variation.
Elementary Number Theory-Division algorithm. Prime and composite numbers. Tests of divisibility by 2, 3, 4, 5, 9 and 11 Multiples and factors. Factorisation Theorem. H.C.F. and L.C.M. Euclidean Algorithm. Logarithms to base 10 laws of logarithms, use of logarithmic tables.

Algebra

Basic Operations, Simple factors, Remainder Theorem, H.C.F., L.C.M. Theory of polynomials, solutions of quadratic equations, relation between its roots and coefficient (Only real roots to be considered). Simultaneous linear equations in two unknowns-analytical and graphical solutions. Simultaneous linear in equations in two variables and their solutions. Practical problems leading to two simultaneous linear equations or in equations in two variables or quadratic equations in one variable and their solutions. Set language and set notation, Rational expressions and conditional identities Laws of indices.

Sine x, Cosine x, Tangent x when 00 < x < 900 Values of sin x, cos x and tan x, for x = 00, 300,450,600 and 900. Simple trigonometric identities. Use of trigonometric tables. Simple cases of heights and distances. Geometry Lines and angles, Plane and plane figures, Theorems on (i) Properties of angles at a point, (ii) Parallel lines, (iii) Sides and angles of a triangle, (iv) congruency of triangles, (v) Similar triangles, (vi) Concurrence of medians and altitudes, (vii) Properties of angles, sides and diagonals of a parallelogram rectangle and square, (viii) Circles and its properties including tangents and normal, (ix) Loci. Mensuration Areas of squares rectangles, parallelograms, triangle and circle. Areas of figures which can be split up into these figures (Field Book), Surface area and volume of cuboids, lateral surface and volume of right circular cones and cylinders, surface area and volume of spheres. Statistics Collection and tabulation of statistical data, Graphical representation, frequency polygons, histograms, bar charts, pie charts etc. Measures of central tendency. INTELLIGENCE & PERSONALITY TEST In addition to the interview the candidates will be put to Intelligence Tests both verbal and non-verbal, designed to assess their basic intelligence. They will also be put to Group Tests such as group discussions, group planning, outdoor group discussions, group planning, outdoor group tasks, and asked to give brief lectures on specified subjects. All these tests are intended to judge the mental caliber of a candidate. In broad terms, this is really an assessment of not only his intellectual qualities but also his social traits and interests in current affairs.

(a) Should have secured 40% marks in each subject and 50% marks in aggregate in class XII.

(b) Should have studied English and Math/Accts/Book keeping in class XII or Class X. Should have secured min 40% marks in each subject, whether it was studied in class XII or Class X.

(c) If a candidate is a graduate (any field) with Maths/Acct/Book Keeping and English (even elective) as one of the subjects, the stipulation of scoring 40% marks in Maths/ English in class X or XII and scoring 50% marks in aggregate in class XII is waived off.

(d) If a candidate is graduate but not having English and Maths/ Accts/ Book Keeping at graduate level, he should have scored minimum 40% marks in English and Maths/ Accts/ Book Keeping at least once in Class X or Class XII.

(e) Selection is based on ALL INDIA MERIT LIST.
